A Bachelor of Pharmacy is only the first step. Before you can practise, the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU) expects you to pass an eligibility exam, complete a year of internship at an accredited centre, pass a pre-registration exam and join the Society, then renew your certificate of practice every year. This guide follows the requirements PSU publishes, with the fees it set for 2026/2027.

Step 1: the pre-internship or eligibility exam

PSU says that to sit its pre-internship exam you need a B.Pharm from a recognised university or institution and at least two principal passes at A level in the basic sciences: chemistry, biology and physics. The PSU examination committee vets every applicant first, and the exam runs twice a year, in January and July.

Applications go to the Secretary of the Society, on paper and online through the PSU portal at www.psucop.com.

  • A written or typed application letter to the Secretary, PSU.
  • The pre-internship application form, from the PSU website or the PSU offices at Pharmacy House, Kyambogo Banda.
  • Your CV, admission letter, certified transcript and certified academic certificate.
  • Copies of your A level, O level and PLE certificates and your birth certificate.
  • Proof of payment: UGX 250,000 for Ugandans or USD 200 for non Ugandans, plus UGX 10,000 for a spring file.
  • One coloured passport photo.

If you studied pharmacy outside Uganda, PSU asks for your academic documents to be equated to Ugandan grades by UNEB first.

Step 2: one year of internship

Once you pass, the National Internship Committee deploys you to an accredited internship centre for one year. Treat the year as the practical half of your qualification: the next exam tests what you did there.

Step 3: the pre-registration exam

After the internship you sit the pre-registration exam, held in February and August. It is one comprehensive paper on six areas: drug regulation; medicines and supply chain management; clinical pharmacy and pharmaceutical care; professionalism, pharmacy law and ethics; general and community pharmacy practice; and pharmaceutical manufacturing or industrial pharmacy.

You apply with a letter to the Secretary, the pre-registration form, the online application on www.psucop.com, an updated CV, a letter of completion from your internship centre and proof of payment of UGX 350,000 (USD 200 for non Ugandans).

Step 4: join the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda

After passing, you apply for membership of the Society, attaching your pre-registration results and a passport photo. PSU opens membership applications at set times: its call of 4 September 2026 ran only until 11 September 2026 at 5 pm, so watch the PSU website once your results are out.

  • Entrance fee: UGX 250,000.
  • Annual subscription: UGX 275,000.
  • ID: UGX 35,000.
  • Code of conduct: UGX 20,000.
  • Total for 2026/2027: UGX 580,000, paid to the PSU bank account given in the call, with hard copies taken to Pharmacy House, Banda Kyambogo.

Every year: subscription and certificate of practice

Membership is not a one off. PSU says every member pays an annual subscription and receives an annual membership certificate, and practising pharmacists apply for a certificate of practice, using the forms on the PSU website. Employers, especially pharmacies and hospitals, check that your certificate is current.

Jobs while you qualify

Public posts for pharmacists are advertised by the Health Service Commission and district service commissions, which ask for your registration details. Keep every receipt, letter and result from the steps above in one folder: you will be asked for them again.
