Tips for this CV
- Write your results the way recruiters here read them: UCE and UACE with the year and the school, then your diploma or degree with its class. Keep your result slips ready, because the advert often asks for copies.
- If your job needs a council licence, put it near the top with the number and the year it runs to: Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council, Allied Health Professionals Council, Medical and Dental Practitioners Council and so on.
- Government posts usually want a form as well. The Health Service Commission asks for Public Service Form 3, the Education Service Commission has ESC Form 3 and the Judicial Service Commission has its own forms. Your CV supports the form, it does not replace it.
- Leave out your age, marital status, tribe and religion unless the advert asks. A recruiter only needs what shows you can do the job.
- Put your district or town and a phone number that you answer. Many panels phone before they email, so check that your voicemail and your WhatsApp name look right.
You don't need to pay anyone to type your CV. A plain one or two page CV is what Ugandan panels can read fastest: your name and contacts, a three line summary, work or placements, education from your latest qualification back to UCE, your skills, then two or three referees. The form follows that order. Your draft stays in this browser, so you can close the page and come back.
What Ugandan recruiters look for first
- The post you're applying for, written in the same words as the advert.
- The exact qualification the advert names, with the year and the institution.
- Your council registration or practising licence, if your job has one.
- Numbers from real work: patients seen in a day, the size of a class, the amount you handled at the till.
- Referees who can be reached, with a phone number and an email.
No work experience yet
Use the work section for industrial training, internships, volunteering and school or campus leadership. Say what you did, not just where you were. For example: helped prepare monthly bank reconciliations for a district office during 10 weeks of industrial training. Our guide on CVs with no experience shows more of this.
Government jobs need more than a CV
The Health Service Commission takes applications on hscers.ug and asks you to fill Public Service Form 3 and bring it to the oral interview. The Education Service Commission publishes ESC Form 3 and the Judicial Service Commission publishes its own Form 1 and Form 2. Keep your CV up to date anyway, because you'll copy from it, and many NGOs and companies still ask for one.
Questions people ask
Should I put a photo on my CV in Uganda?
Only if the advert asks. That's our advice, not a law. Some public forms do ask for a passport photo, and they'll tell you the size.
Is this CV builder really free?
Yes. There's no account, no trial and no charge at the end. Saving as a PDF uses your own browser's print function.
Can I do this on a phone?
Yes. On a phone, press Save as PDF and choose Save as PDF in the print menu. Check the file before you send it.
How long should a CV be?
One page if you're starting out, two if you've got years of work to show. A panel reads many at once, so put the strongest part first.
