You

For example: 3 years as a sales assistant in a phone shop

For example: stock control, customer care and Excel

One sentence that could only be about them.

The job

For example: my certificates

Type your name, the job title and the employer to see your subject line, email and cover letter.

Before you send

  • Read how the advert wants it. Many public bodies take applications only on their own portal, such as hscers.ug for the Health Service Commission, and an email will not count.
  • If an advert says to combine your documents into one PDF, do that. The Judicial Service Commission has asked for exactly that, sent to the address it gives for each post.
  • Copy the post title and reference number exactly as the advert prints them. District adverts often have many posts on one page.
  • Applying is free. Nobody should ask you for money to send, speed up or receive your application.

A good application to a Ugandan employer fits on one page. It says which post you're applying for and where you saw it, gives the reference number if there is one, adds two or three reasons you fit, and lists what you've attached. For a post of Accounts Assistant with reference DSC/12/2026, your subject line would read: Application for Accounts Assistant, ref DSC/12/2026, followed by your name.

Check the route before you write anything

Many public bodies don't take email at all. The Health Service Commission's October 2026 advert says applications must be filled online at hscers.ug. The Education Service Commission has its own eRecruitment system and form. The Judicial Service Commission has asked for documents as a single PDF, sent to an address it gives for each post. If an advert names a route, use that one and no other.

The UPDF's 2026 exercise and the police's 2025 advert both asked for a handwritten application. So if the advert says handwritten, copy this letter out by hand.

What makes a panel keep reading

  • The exact post title and reference number from the advert.
  • Your qualification first if the advert lists one as a must.
  • One real fact from your work or training, with a number if you can.
  • A phone number you'll answer, and an email address with your real name in it.
  • Attachments named clearly, such as Akello-CV.pdf, not scan0012.pdf.

Questions people ask

Who do I address the letter to?

Use the title printed in the advert, such as The Secretary, District Service Commission. If it names nobody, write Dear Sir or Madam and end with Yours faithfully. If it names a person, end with Yours sincerely.

Should the letter go in the email or as an attachment?

Put a short message in the email itself and attach the letter and CV as PDF files, unless the advert asks for one single file.

Do I have to pay to apply?

No. Applying is free. If anyone asks you for money to send or receive an application, stop and check them with our job scam check.
