Most interviews in Uganda open with: tell us about yourself. Try it for one minute. Start with your qualification and where you got it, say what you did in your last job or placement, then finish with why that leads to this post. Public panels often go on to the duties in the advert and to integrity, so there's a set of those questions here too.
Before a government panel
Read the duties in the advert and be ready to say them in your own words. Bring what the shortlist notice asks for. The Health Service Commission tells applicants to fill Public Service Form 3 and present it at the oral interview, and its adverts list the academic and professional documents you'll need. Check your own notice, since each exercise sets its own rules.
How to practise so it helps
- Say your answers out loud, even alone. Thinking an answer isn't the same as saying it.
- Keep most answers to one or two minutes. Use the timer.
- Have three short stories ready: a problem you solved, a time you worked with others and a mistake you fixed.
- Ask a friend to read the questions and stop you if you wander.
- Have two questions of your own ready for the end.
When they ask about money
For a government post the pay follows the scale in the advert, so you can simply say you accept it. For an NGO or a company, work out a range first with our salary tool and give it as a gross figure. Never agree to pay anyone to pass an interview.
Questions people ask
What are the most common interview questions in Uganda?
Tell us about yourself, why do you want this job, what do you know about us, tell us about a problem you solved, and what salary do you expect. Public panels add questions on the duties in the advert and on integrity.
How should I dress?
Clean and smart for the job you want. A plain shirt and trousers or a simple dress is fine for most posts. You don't need to buy a new suit.
Are these the real questions they'll ask me?
They're common questions we wrote for practice, not leaked ones. Nobody can honestly sell you the real questions for an interview.
