In Uganda you may practise surveying only with a valid practising certificate from the Surveyors Registration Board (SRB). Registration takes a recognised degree or diploma, two years of local experience under a registered surveyor in your discipline, two referees and an assessment through the Institution of Surveyors of Uganda. Land surveyors also need references for their cadastral work. This guide follows the SRB's published requirements.

Before you apply

  • A first degree or diploma recognised by the Board.
  • Two years of post qualification local experience under a surveyor registered in Uganda.
  • Two referees, both registered surveyors in your discipline who have been on the register for at least three years. One must be your supervisor, and you must have appeared on their list of assistants for at least two years.
  • An assessment fee of UGX 400,000; re sitting the interview assessment costs UGX 200,000.

The two years count only if your supervisor lists you as an assistant, so ask to be added from your first day in a survey firm.

The registration route

  • Download SRB Form 1 from the SRB website or collect it at the Board offices, fill it and return it to the Board.
  • The Board sends your forms to the Institution of Surveyors of Uganda, which processes them and returns them with the critical analysis report assessed at your Professional Associate interview.
  • Land surveyors also need a reference for at least five of their cadastral jobs from the Commissioner, Surveys and Mapping, at the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development.
  • The Board's Membership and Registration Committee assesses you and makes a recommendation; the Board then decides.
  • You hear the decision within 7 to 14 working days after the interview.

The SRB publishes separate professional experience appendices for land, quantity, valuation and mining or hydrological surveyors: use the one for your discipline.

Renew the practising certificate

To renew, download SRB Form 3, pay UGX 500,000 and send the signed form with the proof of payment to the Board offices or its official email. The Board processes the certificate and tells you when it is ready to collect. Plan the renewal before your current certificate expires: practising without a valid one is not allowed.

Surveyors from outside Uganda

Foreign surveyors apply for temporary registration with a certificate of good conduct from their country's board, certified copies of their current practising certificate, registration certificate and academic documents, a passport or national ID and the registration form in duplicate.
