Engineering employers in Uganda often ask for registration with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB). Registration takes years of planning, not a weekend of paperwork: degree holders need four years of supervised practice, three sponsors in their own field and a detailed career report. This guide sets out the ERB's requirements for each category and what to start collecting now.

Why registration matters

The ERB is established under the Engineers Registration Act, Cap 299. It describes registration as a quality assurance step that keeps incompetent practitioners out of the profession and promotes professional accountability. Employers notice: the Judicial Service Commission's 2026 advert for an estates post, for example, listed membership with the ERB among its requirements. The ERB itself does not offer engineering jobs; it is a regulator.

Which category fits you

The ERB's answers for Ugandan nationals set these conditions.

  • Registered Engineer: a bachelor's degree in any engineering discipline, employment in an engineering function, corporate membership of a recognised engineering institution, at least 25 years of age, and four years of practical experience after graduation, made up of two years of pupilage training and two years of post pupilage training.
  • Registered Technician or Technologist: a Higher Technical Diploma, Ordinary Diploma or Licence of a university or school of engineering recognised by the Board, at least 23 years of age, and employment in an engineering function. Membership of a recognised engineering institution is an added advantage.
  • Engineers from outside the East African Community apply for temporary registration under a separate list of requirements.

Only a bachelor's degree in engineering leads to Registered Engineer. Diploma holders register as technicians or technologists.

Plan your experience and sponsors from the start

The ERB application puts its main weight on practical training and later employment: you must name the engineers you worked under and the period of that training. Keep a record from your first job of who supervised you, on which projects and for how long.

You also need stamped recommendation letters from three sponsors, who must be registered engineers in your own field of specialisation. A civil engineer needs civil engineers. The ERB says sponsors must be fully paid up with the ERB and the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE).

Apply online

  • Create an account on the ERB system at registration.erb.go.ug.
  • Fill in the biodata form carefully, especially your practical training and employment.
  • Attach the stamped recommendation letters from your three sponsors.
  • Attach your career report documents, and for engineers the technical report, in the order below.
  • Pay the application fee through the system, by bank or by MTN Mobile Money using the ERB merchant code, with your name and the purpose in the payment reference.

Arrange the career and technical reports

For engineers who are UIPE corporate members or East African direct applicants, the ERB's September 2026 requirements list:

  • the corporate membership letter, scanned in colour, and the UIPE corporate membership certificate;
  • a detailed career report;
  • certified academic certificates, transcripts, UNEB certificates and UNEB verification letters, scanned in colour, and any other qualifications such as a master's or PhD;
  • letters of employment or service contracts;
  • evidence of continuing professional development and engineering training;
  • the organogram of your current employer;
  • a technical report, with stamped drawings and calculations where necessary.

Technicians and technologists attach the same kinds of documents, with a professional membership certificate if they have one. The ERB says a career report template can be requested from registration@erb.go.ug.

What it costs

The ERB's requirement documents published in September 2026 set application fees of UGX 400,000 for engineers, UGX 100,000 for technicians and UGX 200,000 for technologists. Annual fees and other charges are in the ERB fee structure on erb.go.ug. Fees change, so check the current documents before you pay, and pay only to the ERB accounts and merchant code published on its website.
