Driver salary in Uganda: government scale and published adverts
Government driver posts are advertised at scale U8. This guide gives the 2026/27 U8 pay and the figures that driver adverts on work.co.ug published in October 2026.
District Service Commissions advertise driver posts at salary scale U8: Lyantonde District in March 2026 and Jinja District in 2025/26. NGOs, companies and agencies set their own pay. The table puts the government scale next to the driver adverts that printed a figure when we checked on 12 October 2026.

The U8 figures are the 2026/27 general salary structure. The adverts are quoted as published; FHI 360's annual range works out at about UGX 1,333,000 to 1,667,000 a month before deductions.
Why the figures are so far apart
U8 is the support staff scale in the general public service structure, with an upper band for staff with UCE and additional requirements and a lower band for staff with UCE. District adverts give the driver post as U8 without naming the band, so ask which one applies.
When we checked on 12 October 2026, three of the eight driver adverts on work.co.ug published pay: two from FHI 360 and one from Milestone Labour Agency. The FHI 360 adverts state an annual basic salary range and say the final offer depends on several factors. The agency advert gives a wide monthly range, so ask where in the range the offer sits.
What to check before you accept
Ask whether the figure is basic or gross, which licence class the job needs, how overtime and night trips are paid, and whether field allowances are paid on top of the salary. Get the answers in writing with the offer.
Travel and field allowances can be paid separately from the basic salary. Compare the regular monthly pay first, then the extras.
Take-home pay on the government scale
Pay up to UGX 335,000 a month has no PAYE, so a driver at the top of U8 Upper, UGX 237,069, pays none. Local Service Tax for this pay is UGX 10,000 a year. NSSF takes 5% if the job is covered by NSSF rather than the government pension scheme.
