Doctor salary in Uganda: medical officer to consultant, 2026/27
Government pay for medical officers, senior medical officers, consultants and other senior health posts from the 2026/27 public service salary structure.
Unlike most health posts, doctors are named directly in Schedule 6 of the public service salary structure. The figures below are the monthly and annual gross salaries for 2026/27 from Circular Standing Instruction No. 6 of 2026. They apply to doctors employed in the public service, not to private hospitals or NGOs.

Gross salary before PAYE and other deductions. In 2026/27 each of these posts has one figure at every salary point, and the figures are the same as in 2025/26.
Where a Medical Officer post sits
District adverts give a Medical Officer post at U4: Lyantonde District advertised one in March 2026. In Schedule 6 that is the U4 (Med-1) row, UGX 5,408,476 a month.
The schedule also lists pharmacists and dental surgeons on the same rows as medical officers at each level. Other health professionals in U4 are on a separate row, Other Medical Personnel in U4 (Med-2), at UGX 4,408,476 a month.
Private practice and NGOs
Private hospitals, faith-based facilities and NGOs set their own pay. A public scale is a useful reference point when you compare an offer, but it is not a market average.
When we checked on 12 October 2026, none of the healthcare adverts on work.co.ug published a salary figure.
From the scale to the amount you receive
On UGX 5,408,476 a month, PAYE is UGX 1,510,793 in a month without Local Service Tax. A Medical Officer on pensionable terms, outside NSSF, would receive UGX 3,897,683 before loans or other deductions. Pay above UGX 10,000,000 a month carries an additional 10% PAYE on the part above that amount.
