How to join the UPDF: requirements, age limits and steps from the 2026 recruitment
The 2026 UPDF recruitment has closed. Applications ran online from 10 to 24 June, and physical recruitment ran from 10 to 22 August. Here's what it asked for, so you can prepare for the next one. It's free, with no agents.

You can't apply to the UPDF right now. The General Recruitment Exercise 2026 has finished, and we found no later exercise announced on the UPDF pages we opened on 2 November 2026. The requirements below are what the 2026 exercise asked for, so treat them as a guide to the next round, not a promise. General recruits had to be 18 to 22, with UCE or UACE from 2024 or 2025, and recommendations from local leaders.
Who could apply in 2026
- An adult Ugandan citizen with a valid National ID.
- Physically and medically fit, and ready to undergo the tests.
- Law abiding, with no criminal record.
- Application signed by your LCI, LCII and LCIII Chairpersons, the GISO or DISO, and the Resident District Commissioner.
- Living in the area where you apply. The UPDF said census figures would set quotas for each city and district.
General recruits: 18 to 22 years
These are the regular forces, and the certificates had to be recent.
UCE: obtained in 2024 or 2025 UACE arts: obtained in 2024 or 2025, two principal passes, at least 10 points in one sitting UACE sciences: obtained in 2024 or 2025, two principal passes, at least 8 points in one sitting, with core sciences such as Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Technical Drawing or Agriculture
Professionals: age limits by field
The UPDF also recruited people with professional qualifications, and it strongly encouraged women with professional qualifications to apply. Each field had its own papers and experience, so read the full advert for the next exercise.
ICT degree or diploma: below 25 Engineering degree, second class upper or above: below 30 Trades and technical diploma or certificate, with 3 years of experience: below 28 Pilot instructors: below 35 Pilots, aircraft engineers, air traffic controllers: below 30 Meteorologists: below 25 Specialist doctors and pharmacists: below 35 Medical officers and dental surgeons: below 30 Nurses and allied health workers: below 28 Advocates, with 5 years of practice: 30 and below Graduate teachers: 23 to 30 Sports people: 18 to 30 Social scientists: 20 to 25 Musicians: 18 to 24
Health applicants also needed a CGPA of 3.0 or above and a valid annual practising licence. Graduate secondary teachers needed science combinations and a valid teacher's registration certificate from the Ministry of Education and Sports.
How the 2026 exercise worked
- Online application, 10 to 24 June 2026, at recruitment.updf.go.ug. You uploaded your application with a passport photo, academic documents and your National ID.
- Shortlist, 1 to 14 July 2026, published on the UPDF website and displayed at city and district headquarters.
- Physical recruitment, first planned for 20 July to 1 August. A UPDF notice of 24 July moved it to 10 to 22 August 2026, for shortlisted candidates only, in the district where their names appeared.
- Successful applicants got an introduction card to present at their training centre.
Not everyone who's shortlisted gets through. The UPDF reported that at one centre, Wakiso District headquarters on 14 August 2026, 93 candidates reported and 54 qualified.
What to bring to physical recruitment
- A handwritten application with recommendations from your LCI, LCII and LCIII and the GISO or DISO.
- Your National ID or NIN.
- Original and copies of your academic documents. Graduates' documents had to be certified.
- Three coloured passport-size photographs.
It's free, and nobody can sell you a place
The UPDF says recruitment is completely free of charge and that no agents or intermediaries are involved. It asks people to report fraud to the nearest police station, DISO's office or UPDF unit. Forged documents are a criminal offence and lead to arrest and prosecution.
So if anyone asks for money to add your name, says they've got slots, or offers you a certificate, walk away and report it. We also wouldn't trust any page claiming that a new portal has opened unless you can see the notice on updf.go.ug itself. The recruitment portal didn't load when we tried it on 2 November 2026.
How to get ready for the next round
- Get your National ID sorted, because it was required at every stage.
- Scan your academic documents now, and keep them where you can reach them.
- Get to know your LCI, LCII and LCIII chairpersons. You'll need their signatures in a short window.
- Watch updf.go.ug and your district notice board, rather than forwarded posters.
- Stay fit. The exercise included physical and medical interviews.
