Purpose of the Job
To oversee and coordinate the day-to-day operations of the farm and ensure that all farming activities, livestock enterprises and other agricultural production activities are properly planned, implemented and maintained in accordance with Kulika Uganda’s standards.
Key Functions/Responsibilities
- Farm Operations
- Supervise daily farm activities, including crop production, livestock management, agroforestry and other farm enterprises.
- Prepare daily and weekly work plans for farm workers and ensure that assigned activities are completed.
- Monitor land preparation, planting, weeding, harvesting and post-harvest handling.
- Ensure proper maintenance of farm structures, equipment, tools and facilities.
- Livestock Management
- Oversee the daily management of pigs, poultry, goats, cattle, rabbits and other livestock kept at the Centre.
- Ensure adequate feeding, watering, hygiene and general welfare of livestock.
- Monitor livestock health and promptly report signs of disease or unusual behaviour to the Training Centre Manager and relevant technical personnel.
- Maintain proper records of livestock numbers, births, deaths, sales, purchases, feeds and treatments.
- Farm Workers Supervision
- Allocate duties to farm workers and supervise their performance.
- Ensure that farm workers observe proper work procedures, safety requirements and hygiene standards.
- Identify labour and operational needs and report them to the Training Centre Manager.
- Farm Inputs and Equipment
- Monitor the use and storage of seeds, feeds, fertilizers, organic inputs, veterinary supplies, tools and other farm materials.
- Ensure that farm equipment and tools are properly used and maintained.
- Report damaged, missing or inadequate equipment and inputs.
- Production and Income-Generating Activities
- Support the effective operation of farm-based income-generating activities such as piggery, poultry, honey production, crop production, briquettes and other enterprises.
- Monitor production levels and provide timely information on expected harvests, sales and production challenges.
- Support the Centre in identifying opportunities to improve farm productivity and profitability.
- Records and Reporting
- Maintain accurate farm records and production registers.
- Prepare regular reports on farm activities, production, challenges and requirements.
- Provide information required for planning budgeting, and monitoring of farm enterprises.
- Environmental Management
- Support soil and water conservation, agroforestry and other climate-smart agricultural practices.
- Promote sustainable and environmentally friendly farming practices.
- Ensure proper management of farm waste.
- Other Duties
- Support practical training of interns, farmers and other trainees when required.
- Perform any other duties related to farm operations as assigned by the Training Centre Manager.
Job Specifications
- Diploma in Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Farm Management or a related field.
- At least 3 years’ practical experience in farm management or supervision.
- Practical experience in livestock and crop production.
- Ability to supervise farm workers and manage day-to-day farm operations.
- Good record-keeping and reporting skills.
